Through traditional music performance, Echo Uganda provides both entertainment and educational workshops about the culture and music of East Africa
Programs for Children
Option a) Demonstration with Gideon Children's workshops involve instrument demonstration, basics about instrument playing, and simple performances and playing songs with the children. Gideon and the children are able to interact together to learn a few rhythms and dances. Good for small groups.
Option b) Demonstration with the Band
With the band playing traditional folk music from Uganda, Gideon will guide the children in simple African dance movements and playing African instruments along with the band. Gideon will describe the roles of instruments, dances, stories and songs in the Ugandan culture.
Option c) Teaching Series
Gideon and the classroom teacher/music teacher will work together to arrange and teach an African (instrumental, song and dance) piece for the students to learn. Gideon will train and rehearse with the children. The culmination of the program is a parents’ day where the children will present what they have learned during the course of training.
Duration is 6-8 weeks
Option d) Cultural Workshop
The goal of this workshop is to explore what the daily life of an African child looks like. Through story telling and the use of instruments and songs, Gideon will speak, perform, dance and teach African traditions. This is a great way of satisfying children’s curiosity about how other people live. 45min - 1hr
Option e) Stage Performance
Echo Uganda will perform traditional folk music from Uganda on hand-made instruments. Gideon will tell stories about the songs that describe their origins and purposes. This option is more formal than the other options, and is ideal for large groups of students. 1 – 2hrs
Programs for Adults
Workshops involve instrument demonstration, basics about instrument playing, dancing, and simple performances. Explore some key elements of African music and its performance, as well as the role of traditional music in cultural ceremonies of East Africa. Storytelling, dancing, and music education/learning. Ideal for universities and professional development. 45min – 1hr
For Special Needs Groups
Option a) Workshop
Gideon with his instruments, will perform, tell stories, dance and sing while interacting with the audience/class. He will share instruments with everyone in the group and teach simple rhythms and dances while he performs along with the audience. This is ideal for smaller groups. 45min
Option b) Performance
Echo Uganda will perform East African folk music as Gideon demonstrates and guides the audience in some simple movements, rhythms and dance. The band will also interact with the audience in an attempt to get everyone involved. Great for larger groups
